Jim Meiklejohn is a principal at Meiklejohn Architects Inc in Kelowna, B.C.; a second-generation firm that has been in active since 1953. Jim came to Kelowna via Penticton in 2000 to open the company’s second office and has seen the firm develop into an award-winning and leading design studio in the Okanagan. Jim comes from a family of architects that includes both parents and two of his three brothers.
Jim has been involved in the business community with a passion for regional Architectural and Urban Design issues. Jim has been involved in community activities for several years, including various projects to make better use of our urban laneways in both Penticton and Kelowna (including background work for the ‘e-taco’ site in downtown Kelowna) The architectural practice explores a wide range of building and project types including all levels of education including KSS, Dr. Knox and Aberdeen Hall Secondary school, multi-family residential, retail and office building projects including the Landmark VI, Okanagan Centre for Innovation and TOLKO Industries’ Vernon headquarters. Jim was the First LEED Accredited Architect in the Okanagan and the firm has completed several LEED Gold Certified building New Gate Apartments and Maple Ridge SPCA (the first LEED Gold Certified Animal Shelter in Canada).
The other firm leaders include principals Shirley Ng and Stoke Tonne and project architect Collin Crabbe. The firm has won many awards including provincial and national heritage awards for the Laurel Packinghouse restoration, the Mayor’s first environmental award for the Mission Group’s MODE condominiums, Woodworks BC’s Best Multi-family project Award in BC for Cannery Lofts by Webster Development’s as well as several UDI and Tommie awards.
Jim graduated in 1986 (Cum Laude) with a Bachelor of Architecture from Washington State University and was a member of Tau Beta Pi (a US Engineering Honors Society)
